White, Lucille
Hello, I am Lucille Watkins White, Ed.D. I hold several meaningful distinctions within our chapter. I am a Charter Member, the first confessed Delta Dear, and the oldest active member.
I pledged Delta Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated at Grambling College (now Grambling State University) in Grambling, Louisiana, during the Spring of 1962. I was one of eleven women in a close-knit line affectionately known as the Pyramids (Ducks) who sought entry into our illustrious sisterhood.
During Hell Week, the Ducks lived together on the top floor of a vacant dormitory. There, we studied diligently, coordinated matching outfits, and practiced routines in preparation for each day’s activities. Each morning and evening, escorted by a contingent of Big Sisters, we marched to the cafeteria—performing songs, chants, and choreographed steps or dance routines for eager students and staff.
On Friday night, after much anticipation and preparation, we proudly crossed into Delta Land.
Professionally, I am a retired educator and administrator with Chicago Public Schools, where I served for 40 years. Upon my retirement, I was honored and celebrated by the school community as a “Living Legend.”
I was further recognized with a Commemorative Brick, permanently placed in the historic Jesse Owens Park on the southeast side of Chicago—an enduring marker of my service and legacy.
